May 13, 2013 – On Friday, the latest update on novel coronavirus was issued from Dr. Arlene King, Chief Medical Officer of Health for the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The memo reported that, as of May 9, 2013, the World Health Organization has confirmed several new cases of the novel coronavirus in Saudi Arabia and France.

To date, there have been no cases of novel coronavirus detected in Ontario or Canada and the risk to Ontarians of contracting this virus remains low. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, with Public Heath Ontario and the Public Health Agency of Canada, continues to closely monitoring the evolving situation.

However, due to the high mortality rate in a small number of known cases and the suggestion of nosocomial transmission, it is necessary that we remain vigilant. This will include increased screening for Acute Respiratory Illness (ARI) as well as adding additional precautions to routine practices when caring for ARI patients with a travel history to the affected areas.
