Occupational Stress Injury Resiliency (OSIR) tool

Identify stress-related risks and build resiliency in the workplace.

Using the OSIR tool

Occupational stress injuries (OSI) refer to persistent psychological difficulties experienced as a result of high-stress or traumatic experiences at work.

The OSIR tool is an assessment tool developed by our PSHSA experts and The Conference Board of Canada. It measures workplace risk for OSI by assessing four key areas in your organization: leadership, environment, supports, and resiliency behaviours.

  • evaluate
existing programs, policies, resources, and supports
  • know
the risk of OSI in your workplace
  • detect
    preventative approaches through evidence-informed insights
  • build
    a resilient workplace
  • inform
workplace mental health strategies, action plans, and programs

How OSIR works

Employees are sent an anonymous digital 26-question survey and aggregate results are sent to the employer. The OSIR Tool measures four factors that impact an employee’s vulnerability to an occupational stress injury:

  1. support programs
  2. supportive environment
  3. supportive leadership
  4. resiliency behaviours

The OSIR tool generates a score that falls into three vulnerability profiles, ranging from high to minimal risk for OSI: challenge, concern, and thriving.

The results are linked to important outcomes for mental health, physical health, and the workplace – such as absenteeism – and actionable solutions or preventative measures are provided.

How PSHSA can help

We provide both technical and consulting support to help clients effectively implement the survey and review results. From there, clients can continue to work with PSHSA to develop action plans or go a step further in assessing risk of psychological harm with Radius, an assessment that evaluates risk at the individual job-level.
