About This Course

This three-day course covers the first part of the training required for you to be a certified member of a workplace Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC). You can complete JHSC Certification Part 1 training with a knowledgeable instructor either in-person or online, or choose to learn on your own with self-paced eLearning.

Before beginning JHSC Certification Part 1, learners are required to complete Basic Occupational Health and Safety Training required under O.Reg 297.13, which is offered as a 1-hour eLearning module for both supervisors and workers.

Note: JHSC Certification Part 2 must be completed within 12 months of completing JHSC Certification Part 1.

What You'll Learn

This course provides in-depth practical information about tasks as they related to workplace hazards. It will teach you how to:

  • recognize workplace hazards
  • evaluate the risk of incidents, injuries, and illness
  • respond to employee health and safety complaints and suggestions

In our virtual self-paced eLearning format, this course consists of 9 eLearning modules and 8 Insights videos. It totals approximately 13 hours (2 days) of online instruction, interactive lessons and knowledge checks with job aids and insightful videos. Each module in this training program highlights specific references to the JHSC Certification standard as set out by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD) and can be reviewed below in ‘Course Details’.

Learners are expected to follow our Code of Conduct. For both virtual formats, learners must ensure their technical setup meet the training requirements.

Who Is This Course For

Any worker or JHSC member who wants to become JHSC certified, regardless of any previous experience in health and safety.

Workplaces that regularly have 20 or more employees must ensure at least two personnel have completed the certification training.

Course Completion

There are various types of evaluations within this course including exercises, assessments, reflections, discussions, and a written test. The written test at the end of the session makes sure that you meet the learning outcomes of the course, and a passing grade of 75% is required to receive a certificate of completion.

Combined with Part 2, this training course leads to certification under Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) guidelines.
